Maritime VSAT demand accelerates
Maritime digitalisation trends and increasing requests for onboard social media are accelerating demand for VSAT on vessels. Its ability to facilitate better crew communications and online access and improvements in operational performance is driving installation of these units in various bands.
On the supply side, more broadband is being made available to shipping and yachting markets through the launch of high-throughput satellites. While improvements in antenna technology has enabled VSAT to be deployed on smaller vessels and in more rugged environments.
All this is behind the rise in the number of VSAT systems installed on vessels by KVH Industries to more than 8,000 from 7,000 units nine months ago. This demand has given KVH a leading market share in the number of installed units, according to consultant Euroconsult.
